Sundays with Sam - The Sunday Post

Sundays with Sam is a combination of Sunday Post hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews.

My Week in Review

All is quiet in these parts. I fell behind on my blog hopping, because I was wrapped up in my books. Today is my dad's birthday, and it's really special, because this time last year, he was in the hospital. They didn't expect him to ever leave, and now, one year later, he doesn't need the oxygen and they found no cancer in his lungs. So, I am very grateful for today.

STACKING THE SHELVES

I got some really great books this week, and I need to get through my 2017 books, so I can start reading these 2018 releases.

What I Read Last Week

I read six books and listened to two audiobooks. I kind of ODed on romance again, but I sort of enjoyed every second of it. My highest rated book was Crooked Kingdom, which I had to speed read, because my loan was almost up. I was really impressed with how fast I got through that book.

  • The Wright Mistake by K.A. Linda (audiobook): I am a fan of the Wright Brother books, and this was probably one of my favorites yet. It was a second chance (third chance?) romance, with a really broken hero. There was this really devastating part too. Can't wait for the next one.
  • Saving It by Monica Murphy: This was a cute friends-to-more story, and I guess I should have heeded the synopsis, which said it had an American Pie vibe, because I think that was what kept me from loving this one. Nonetheless, it was a fun read with some really great moments.
  • Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo: I am really proud of myself for finally finishing this series, but why Bardugo! Why did you have to do that! I was a sobbing mess for a little bit, but overall, found this to be an excellent reading experience. ★ 1/2
  • Offsetting Penalties by Ally Mathews: This one made me smile. I am always game for a good fauxmance to romance, and I loved all the dance and football the author included too.
  • The First Kiss Hypothesis by Christina Mandelski: Friends-to-more and science! I was in from page one. So fun, so cute, so sweet.
  • Shiny Broken Pieces by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton (audiobook): I loved the changes the characters experienced in this one, and how I was given a great ending for each. I like knowing the possible futures for these three. The final scene was a great set up for spinoff too.
  • The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody: This is a grief book, so you know I had to read it. I loved the present day interactions, but struggled a little with the flashbacks. ★ 1/2
  • I Never by Laura Hopper: This book was billed as the modern day Forever, which was a HUGELY popular book, passed from girl to girl when I was a teen, and I definitely think Hopper succeeded in capturing that vibe in this book. I enjoyed it, and the sap in me shed some tears, but also struggled a little with the ending.
What I Am Currently Reading

I am really enjoying Not Now, Not Ever. I have to say, Anderson is great at witty dialog and I am loving my time with these quirky geniuses. I am listening to Honor. It's gritty, but I really wanted to get back to the Point, because I surprisingly loved the companion series.

What I Plan to Read

I am slowly working my way through November releases. Why do I have so many!!! I have been seeing really good things about Now is Everything, so I am most excited about that one.

How was your week?

  1. I love Jay Crownover, but The Point series and the spin off are not my favorites. I am not sure why, but I just don't get as invested in them as I do her other books.
Thats wonderful news about your father. Glad he is healthy and able to enjoy his birthday!

    1. Not my favorites, but solid reads for me. I was really surprised how much I liked them, because I don't really read books with criminal activity, but she is so good at creating that macho, tough guy with the heart of gold.

    1. It really is a reason to celebrate this year. I am enjoying the Wright brothers. I am fairly sure the next romance will be Morgan and Patrick, but I thought Linde set up another one right under our noses. I hope I am right.

    1. Shiny Broken Pieces was the sequel to Tiny Pretty Things. It's quite a look into the cutthroat world of ballet.

  5. I hope you'll love The Fortunate Ones by R.S. Grey, it was really enjoyable. How do you like Honor by Jay Crownover? I thought the couple and story was incredibly unique.

Have a great day and happy reading!!!

    1. I am only a short way into Honor, but it's Jay, so I like it already. She kind of made me happy with the Marked cameo. Nassier is so complicated and morally grey. I am looking forward to learning more about him.

    1. Crooked Kingdom is part of a duology, Six of Crows, and it's part of the bigger world of the Grisha. I did not read the other series, and I did not feel lost in SoC. Not a must, though my co-blogger would disagree with me. So far, so good with Honor. Jay doesn't usually disappoint me.

  7. Happy birthday to your dad! I'm so glad he's healthy now. May he celebrate many more years surrounded by those he loves.

The Wicked Deep has me every intrigued - I'll be waiting for you review. I do love Leigh Bardugo a lot, but after Crooked Kingdom I was so mad at her. She broke my heart! Why Leigh? Why did you do that?!

Happy readings & Wishes of a great week.

    1. Doesn't The Wicked Deep look awesome?! I am excited about it. It is sort of hard not breaking into my 2018 books, but I have so many November releases to get through. Self control, I must have some self control. I am getting some tears in my eyes just thinking about Crooked Kingdom. It was tough. Do you ever feel like it's always your favorite character that suffers the most? *sob*

  9. I'm happy to hear the good news about your father, Sam!

I loved Graffiti Moon! I laughed myself silly in some parts! A Little Wanting Song was good, too. Hope you enjoy both. I am slowly working on Novembers releases as well, and I have a couple October books I still need to read. I wish I could clone myself, too, to catch up! :)

    1. Yeah, I because obsessed with Cath Crowley after reading Words in Deep Blue, so when I saw those books on sale, I could not resist. I DNFed a couple of October books, but I am really far behind on November. I have a can-do spirit though, and hopefully, my library loans don't come through and distract me.

  11. Happy birthday to your Dad and that's great news he's remained healthy. You read a lot of great books. I need to read the Crooked Kingdom soon, before I forget what happened in the first book lol. I hope you have a great week and happy reading!

    1. I anticipated the worst, when my mother was crying after the PET scan results, but she was crying because they were unexpectedly good. You almost don't need to remember much of SoC to read CK. It was a different story with threads to the first, but Bardugo did planted enough of the prior story to get me through.

    1. Every time I think about that part in Crooked Kingdom I get verklempt! It destroyed me. I had to stop reading to have a good cry. I was so happy about those two and then!!! And that final scene. My heart broke in half. I am not going to pretend like I don't want to read The Wicked Deep right now. I am exercising great restraint by not reading my 2018 books before my 2017 books. (everything else is just pre-2017 and are on a someday list)

  20. That's brilliant about your dad. Happy Birthday to him! It's always brilliant when news like that happens, especially when this time last year it wasn't such an optimistic prognosis before.

I still need to read Crooked Kingdom! I borrowed it from the library ages ago but didn't read it. I am now a little excited and want to go borrow it from the library again.

    1. Kiersten was able to get CK for me from the NC eLibrary. It was good. Bardugo is a great writer and she has done an amazing job building that world, but why did she have to do that. Don't say I didn't warn you.

  21. Happy birthday to your dad! Sounds like there's even more reason to celebrate this year. That's such great news. :) I enjoyed Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List. It was cute. And I've been meaning to read something by R.S. Grey for ages. I'm reading Saving It right now but I'm not very far into it (maybe 15%?). I hadn't seen the American Pie reference. So far it's cute but it's too early to tell really. Hope you have a great week!

    1. The American Pie vibe came from the friend interactions, I think. It was cute, and I love friends to more, and there is a really wonderful grand gesture type thing and a good ending. I just am a fan of Murphy's and couldn't quite pinpoint what kept it from being great for me, but it had a lot of great elements.

  22. Happy Birthday to your Dad! That's so great that they haven't found any cancer in his lungs a year later after thinking the worst would happen. He sounds like he is a real fighter.

Looks like you got a lot of great reads this week. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you think of The Wicked Deep.

Yay for finishing Crooked Kingdom! And yes, she gutted me too with that one scene. I still get teary every time I think about it.

It is so awesome to hear about your Dad. My dad passed when I was six, and I still think about him. I am so happy to hear he is cancer free.

    1. I sleep a solid 5 hours a night. Most of my reading is on my commute (3 - 3.5 hours a day). That is my silver lining to my too long journey to work. Sorry you lost your dad when you were so young. I consider myself very blessed to still have both my parents and I even met all my grandparents, with three of them meeting my daughter.
